Oswaldo Cabrera Rushed to Hospital After Scary Injury in Yankees Win
Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera left Monday’s game in an ambulance after suffering what appeared to be a serious leg injury during New York’s 11-5 victory over the Mariners.
The scary moment happened in the ninth inning when Cabrera scored on Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly. His ankle got caught awkwardly underneath him as he tried to avoid the tag from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh while reaching back for home plate.
Players and fans watched in silence as medical staff attended to Cabrera, who was clearly in extreme pain.
“He’s at the hospital,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game. “I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation. Just praying for our guy Cabby tonight and hoping for the best.”
In a touching moment that speaks to Cabrera’s character, Boone revealed that even while in agony, the 26-year-old asked Judge, “Did I score?”
Cabrera has been a steady presence for the Yankees this season, hitting .243 with a home run and 11 RBIs through 33 games. He went 1 for 4 on Monday before the injury, singling in the ninth inning off Mariners reliever Troy Taylor.
The timing is particularly tough for Cabrera, who has worked hard to establish himself as a valuable utility player for the Yankees over the past few seasons.
There is a silver lining for the team, though not one anyone wanted this way. Veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu is expected to return from his calf injury before Tuesday’s game.
“DJ LeMahieu could fall out of bed and hit,” Boone had said earlier Monday, praising the veteran’s natural hitting ability while noting injuries have been his biggest challenge recently.
Trent Grisham was the offensive star of Monday’s game, smashing two home runs to help build the Yankees’ lead.
With the win, New York improved to 24-17 and now sits three games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings.
But the team’s thoughts remain with Cabrera as they await updates on his condition.
